Daisy Yellow № 133
Lime Twist (August challenge) and the ICAD finish line
Hi everyone, it’s Tammy, welcome to issue № 133. Thank you for being a subscriber. Daisy Yellow started 18 years ago at the beginning of my art journey as a place to share what I’m making & write about creativity.
Please consider becoming an annual subscriber! As a thank you for keeping this creative ecosystem 🪸 going, your support instantly unlocks 🔓 extra goodies like the 10-part Creative Gazette, the upcoming Curious Tangents, and whatever else I dream up.
TL;DR: Introducing Lime 🍋🟩Twist (👀 August challenge), 1st set of Twists, ICAD finish line, and registration (re)opens for Mixed Media Amusements. If you’re on the waiting list, check your inbox! 📥😉
Visualize ideas as diving boards, trailheads, envelopes, and beginnings. Invitations that materialize in the form of “what if” questions.
Yesterday was ICAD rev № 16 day 61. Symmetry! Each index card you created symbolizes a proactive & positive decision! Art is part of who we are. We do art for different reasons. grounding|tangible|energizing. My brain is always a bit foggy the first week after ICAD because of the whirlwind aspect. Before you shift gears to your next thing, take your stack of cards and look at them… one by one. You can also do a guided lookback1 to think through your experience.
put on your positivity goggles™️2 🔍🧑🏻🔬
Search for the hidden gems. The violet & mustard yellow of day 7. The description of the sunrise scribbled on the back of day 20. The intersection of pattern|pattern on day 42. And a very groovy “g” on day 56 (fun fact: the lower case g has an ear, neck, and loop).
The work can be the work; it is enough. I like to look for happy accidents & mini-compositions. In Photoshop I cropped small excerpts from 20 imaginary gardens!

😎📷 Snap an image of ALL of your ICADs. Extras, prototypes, drafts, alternates, beta versions, etc. Arrange on the hardwood floor in a grid and snap an aerial 🤣 photo, scatter across the dining table, tack to a cork board…. We want to see ~~all~~ of them. We call this #ICADeverything at instagram. It is possibly, just possibly, the best part. Click the graphic 🔗⤵️ to go to substack notes and add your ICADeverything photo in the comments!!! Let’s do this! You’ve got all week, no rush!
These are my last 8 ICADs for the 2026 challenge. A play on positive/negative space where you make an abstract background and then the next layer of paint reveals the color & pattern underneath!
Mixed Media Amusements (re)opens!

Open thru August 10. Join: Mixed Media Amusements & Musings. PS. An email went out to everyone on the waiting list a few days ago, be sure to look for it. 📥😉

PS. If the newsletter is no longer your thing, no worries, you can unsubscribe at the link below.
If you’re a paid subscriber, there’s a “Guided Lookback” PDF download inside Creative Gazette 07 with questions to walk through your experience (I think it works for any long art project/challenge).
You know how we alter things about text to convey extra info when we are writing online (and on text)? Remember the static of a modem, the AOL portal, or the early blogging era? I’m only half way thru and already recommending this book! Check your library for Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch, published 2019. Per WSJ: “McCulloch’s book is a good start in guiding readers to consider the wild language of the internet as a thing of wonder—a valuable feature, not a bug.”
You are welcome to extrapolate or alter a “twist” to make it apply to the kind of work you are doing.
